Bermuda Races to get Hurricane Damages Repaired Ahead of Second Tropical…

first_imgHAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC — Bermudians who suffered damage to their properties during Hurricane Humberto’s rampage through the island on Wednesday face a race against time to get repairs finished before the next storm arrives.Jerry, the 10th storm of the Atlantic season, has weakened to a tropical storm, but remains on course to hit Bermuda on Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane, according to forecasters. At 6 a.m. local time, Jerry was located 755 miles south of Bermuda, packing 65 mph winds, and moving northwest at 15 mph.Bermuda last suffered a one-two punch inside a week when Hurricanes Fay and Gonzalo struck the island in October 2014.Before Humberto — in which 80 percent of the island lost power and one person severed a finger readying for the storm — Bermuda had escaped hurricanes since Nicole, a Category 3 hurricane, hammered the island in 2016.Humberto ripped off roofs and knocked down utility poles and left farmers counting the cost of the storm. On Friday, National Security Minister Wayne Caines told residents of this British Overseas Territory with a population of around 64,000 not to take down the storm protection they put up for Humberto.“I would like to encourage Bermuda to stay prepared. Let’s keep our level of being prepared up. Do not let your guard down. It is our recommendation that you leave things boarded up and remain in a state of readiness,” Caines said. The Bermuda Electric Light Company (Belco) on Friday night reported 11,000 still without power — roughly one-third of its customers.More than 28,000 lost power during the storm. A spokesman said the company aimed to have power fully restored by the end of Monday.Hamilton docks were open just 24 hours after Humberto, and Caines said there had been “no indication from any grocery stories that we are running low on supplies”.But from autumn seedlings to Christmas carrots and poinsettias, Humberto left farmers and nurseries counting the cost. The battering destroyed greenhouses around the island.Supplies of everything from cucumbers to bananas have been hit, while farmers rush to batten down ahead of Jerry.Tom Wadson, owner of Wadson’s Farm in Southampton parish, declared Humberto’s impact “horrendous, devastating”, with casualties ranging from 2,000 tomato plants to beets and carrots.“Everything in the field is basically toast, and the roof came off our greenhouse. We got a hard hit,” he said.Cassava, another Christmas staple, managed to survive because plants had been topped in advance, but Wadson said his farm had “a couple of tons” of pawpaws on the ground.last_img read more

Today’s MLB Picks: Betting odds, Vegas totals, expert gambling advice for Wednesday, April 3

first_imgThe Red Sox might want to hit the restart button on 2019 after opening 1-5 and on the brink of losing their fifth straight game tonight in Oakland. Their offense has really struggled in this series, being shut out in back-to-back games by a below-average Oakland pitching staff. While you have to think that they are at least going to be able to put up a few runs tonight against A’s starter Marco Estrada, they are still overvalued by the books as -150 favorites. The A’s, meanwhile, have been the most undervalued team over the past year, and for some reason the books have been slow to adjust to how good this team has been. The BetQL models agree with this assessment and have handicapped the A’s as -130 favorites, a solid 60 points off of what we are currently given. The Red Sox are going to get it right eventually, but for now take the value on A’s and wait to back the Red Sox until they travel to Arizona for a three-game series on April 5.BetQL Pick: Oakland Athletics ML (+130)Check out BetQL Mobile App’s Trending Picks and Public Betting tools before making all your bets, and follow me on Twitter (@DFSBenj) for even more NFL, NBA, MLB and PGA daily fantasy and sports betting content. Last night we stayed hot with underdogs after hitting both the Phillies and Orioles money line, but we were let down by the Yankees, who lost 3-1 to the Tigers. For today, we are only going to focus on odds and advice for the night slate, but there are plenty of day matchups to target if you want some early MLB betting action, including round two of Phillies-Nationals.We are back on a few underdogs who are undervalued and playing at home, as well as a slight favorite that saw some big line movement overnight as public and sharp bettors piled on a line that many felt was mispriced by the books. Watch ChangeUp, a new MLB live whip-around show on DAZNBefore we get into the picks, we have to remind you the best place to start researching for a winning ticket is the BetQL Mobile App. Our Trending Picks and Public Betting tools offer a big edge when you’re making bets, regardless of bankroll. For more gambling and MLB DFS advice, follow me on Twitter (@DFSBenj).MORE: DFS Lineup BuilderMLB Picks: Odds, betting trends for Wednesday, April 3*All screenshots are from the BetQL Trending Value Bets Page** All lines are subject to change. The best way to stay up to date on the current lines is to become a BetQL subscriber.Chicago Cubs at Atlanta BravesStarting Pitchers: Jon Lester (LHP) vs. Julio Teheran (RHP)Money Line: CHC +100, ATL -120Run Line: CHC -1.5 (+165), ATL +1.5 (-195)Total: O/U 9The Braves were able to grab their first win of the season on Monday night against the Cubs, and we are going to go right back to them tonight as -120 home favorites. The Braves actually opened as underdogs in this matchup when the lines dropped last night, but early sharp bettors pounded this line down to make Atlanta slight -120 favorites. Another bet that could be interesting in this game is the OVER of nine runs. Both Cubs SP Jon Lester and Braves SP Julio Teheran have a tendency to get lit up, and both teams have hit the OVER in a combined six of their first eight games, including a push in the first matchup of the series when Chicago failed to score.BetQL Pick: Atlanta Braves ML (-120)Houston Astros at Texas RangersStarting Pitchers: Gerrit Cole (RHP) vs. Mike Minor (LHP)Money Line: HOU -195, TEX +165Run Line: HOU -1.5 (-120), TEX +1.5 (+100)Total: O/U 9The BetQL models have opened the season a red-hot 7-0 in underdog bets this season, and we are going right back to the well tonight by targeting the Rangers as they host the Astros in the second game of their series in Arlington. Last night, the Rangers upset Houston 6-4 — with Justin Verlander on the mound, no less. The Rangers offense is humming right now with six or more runs scored in three of their past four games and will face Gerrit Cole. While Cole is certainly no slouch, he did have some struggles on the road over the second half of 2018. The BetQL models have this game handicapped as having value at any line over Rangers +126, so we are going to grab the value on Texas in this spot and hope its offense stays hot and can get to Cole early in the great hitting environment of Globe Life Park.BetQL Pick: Texas Rangers ML (+165)Boston Red Sox at Oakland AthleticsStarting Pitchers: Nathan Eovaldi (RHP) vs. Marco Estrada (RHP)Money Line: BOS -150, OAK +130Run Line: BOS -1.5 (+110), OAK +1.5 (-130)Total: O/U 9last_img read more
